Tis the Season [for tasty beer]
I was fortunate to have a guys’ weekend recently at Ocean Isle Beach, NC with some of my best friends from high school and college. We had a nice bottle share going the whole weekend, and there was an abundance great beer showings. But one style stood out to me as I look back, and it was saison.
Saison is french for “season” and were typically brewed in the winter to be enjoyed in the summer. They are often known as “farmhouse” ales because they were given to farmers to provide refreshment during the long summer work days. Many of them are highly carbonated and have fruity flavors, but not too overpowering in my opinion. Some of the ones representing the weekend and inspired me to create a saison for this week’s Beer-Type logo were Green Bench Saison de Banc Noir and Haysaw Saison by Burial Beer Company. I chose to make mine a “black” saison (or, saison noire according to a handy-dandy Google Translate lookup) with blueberries.
